After much thought, I've decided to sell one of the finest banjos I've ever owned.
This is a 2007 Deering Tenbrooks Saratoga Star with the original Jens Krüger Tone Ring and the original Deering deluxe hardshell case.
The banjo has been carefully maintained, kept in a smoke-free home, and is in excellent overall condition. It plays beautifully and produces the powerful, clear, rich sound that made the Krüger models famous.
About the neck
I have relatively small hands, so I had the neck professionally reshaped by Gryphon Stringed Instruments in Palo Alto, California.
The profile was changed only slightly to a comfortable soft V shape, and the back of the neck now has a smooth speed-neck style finish.
This was not a home modification. The work was performed by one of the most respected fretted instrument repair shops in the country, and the neck remains straight, stable, and comfortable.
Why I'm selling
There is absolutely nothing wrong with this instrument.
Over the last several years my musical interests have gradually shifted toward traditional pre-war Gibson-style bluegrass banjos.
The Krüger tone ring is remarkably refined, with tremendous sustain, clarity, and note separation. Those qualities make it an exceptional instrument, but I've realized that my own playing style simply prefers a drier, more traditional flathead sound.
Rather than letting this wonderful banjo spend most of its time in the case, I'd like to see it go to someone who will truly appreciate what it offers.
