This is one of the most spectacular Prewar Gibson Mastertone banjos I've ever encountered: an exceedingly rare original 5-string Gibson RB-3 Mastertone Banjo from 1927. It features a solid archtop (no-hole) tonering and the original hardshell case. Every single part on this banjo is factory original with the exception of the head, strings and bridge. FON #8705-9, this banjo was originally made for export, and features the Made in USA label on the inside of the resonator and stamp on the back of the headstock. This banjo is in exceptional condition- arguably near mint, with the exception of some minimal play wear to the back of the neck. This banjo still has its original frets and there is still plenty of life left in them. Easily the most gorgeous Brazilian rosewood fingerboard I've seen on an original 5-String Gibson Mastertone. It plays like a dream, and sounds deep and full. No-hole archtop banjos sound markedly different then the much more common 40-hole archtops. When setup with a looser head, these banjos can have great depth and can enter the realm of tonality more often associated with flathead banjos. This is a wonderful banjo in museum condition that is truly inspiring to play. $24,000. Videos upon request. Serious inquiries only. More photos available at the link below.
