An early Epiphone / House of Stathopoulo banjo, from some time after 1917, likely in the 1920s. It has a new 5-string maple neck, which is straight and plays great. It has an 11 7/8" rim and arched tone ring, giving it a sound that is both warm and bright. Sounds great in standard G tuning both clawhammer or with picks, and it also really shines when tuned low to E, like John Hartford sometimes did, or in C with thick baritone strings as Béla Fleck has been doing recently. Set up with a moon bridge and a skin head.

I can't find much info on these early Epiphone banjos, but they have some innovations, including the coordinator rod bolt-on neck instead of dowel stick, and a wooden lip and integrated wooden flange / bracket band to avoid needing to puncture the rim with lots of holes for individual shoes to hold the hooks on.

If you want a versatile, affordable banjo, look no further! The neck is straight and plays great, there's good clear tone all up and down the neck.
