This is a rare Tokai T-650R, from 1981, originally built and distributed in Japan, from the same manufacturer as the vintage Gold Star banjo's.
It is a mahogany neck on a tone hoop style pot assembly. It is a great light weight banjo that has incredible quality for the value. It is also almost 40 years old and in exceptional condition.
It has a standard pot construction with a thin maple rim, and a tone hoop; 3 thumb screws for the resonator. It has a newer Crowe spaced roasted-maple Sullivan bridge, new head, and new Crowe GHS strings. The rest of the banjo is original. The metal has a very even patina, which looks very clean. The inlay and fret board is very clean - almost totally unplayed. Overall, the banjo only has the lightest signs of having been played.
It has good clarity and projects very well, with a slightly warmer tone as it is a mahogany neck. It can serve well alone or in a big jam session with others, despite having no tone ring. It is a very good example of the quality that vintage Gold Stars have been known for. Tokai was a line that was sold in Japan - same parts just a different company name on the headstock.
It comes in a new hard shell case.
