First off I must say this is one of the most beautifully playing and sounding banjos I have ever had the joy to play and own which is many. It needs no set up or anything it plays amazingly with the original frets and the great set up done by Mandolin Brothers before they went out of business after Stan the owner passed recently. Beautiful Whyte Laydie #2 5 string banjo.in amazing original condition. This banjo is a great player with plenty of life left in the frets. Bought from Mandolin Brothers a few years back. Comes with some of the original accessories and a receipt from a previous owner from a famous and one of the first Vintage Musical Instrument stores. The Banjo has great action and plays wonderfully. The famed Gryphon-Fish pearl inlay is in perfect condition and it's hard to believe how old this instrument is. No cracks etc to worry about. Somebody during the course of its long life was going to add another tuner or something and then stopped they did not go thru the headstock only a tiny wooden plug has been but there as a repair and the back of the headstock is smooth even in this spot, seems like this happened a very long time ago and does not affect playability or structural integrity at all. If you wanted a better looking repair it wouldn't be to difficult to make it look almost completly gone if you used a piece of maple and touched up the spot with a light amount of nitro etc (I just don't understand why this would be a big deal anyway though for such a great looking and especially great playing banjo that is over 110 years old!?) It wasn't for me. The banjo has a beautiful warm plucky steel string sound with a crisp treble response with nice pleasant mids and beautiful bass response. 10 15/16" pot 27" scale. With either original or very old calf skin head which sounds better than any modern type head in every way imaginable. To restore the banjo to its full original state all one would have to do is get an old no knot tailpiece and change the 4 headstock tuners, which I wouldn't do as they are all very nice planet tuners with the original grained ivoroid buttons very old as well and most likely prewar. Ask any questions after reviewing the pictures or ask to talk on the phone for an in hand description. Local pickup is welcome near Long Island NY. Don't miss out on this amazing instrument! Nice hard shell shell case included. PLEASE ASK TO SEE MORE PHOTOS IF INTERESTED AS THE SITE ONLY ALLOWED ME FIVE HERE. PLEASE DON'T HESITATE TO CALL IF YOU ARE INTERESTED WANT TO MAKE AN OFFER OR HAVE ANY QUESTIONS. I don't like to do returns on instruments of this age out of worry of the intrument not coming back in one piece even large stores like elderly instruments have this as a policy, so please ask all questions before hand THANK YOU!
