This is a really nice Orpheum No. 3 banjo from around 1920, sn. 11485. It has been converted to a 5-string banjo; the sale includes the original tenor neck and attached dowel stick. The new 5-string neck is a very good replica of an original #3, but there is no "Orpheum" brand inlay on the wood-bound peghead, and the heel is not carved. It has a new dowel stick and an adjustable truss rod. The wood-bound fingerboard is rosewood and was scooped at the heel. The inlays are good but not perfect. The neck was refinished to match the No. 3 rim. It has new 5 Star tuners, including the 5th tuner, spiked at 7th fret. The neck is 1 3/8" wide at the bone nut, 1 15/16" at the heel, and 3/4" thick under the 1st fret. The rim and hardware are completely original, and in very good condition: Elite tailpiece with all the pips, wire armrest is a bit brassed on top, Jos. Rogers Jr. skin head. This banjo is a very solid instrument and it plays great. The string height is 3/32" at the 12th fret, and 9/32" over the scoop, using a 11/16" bridge. I've been playing it around at jams and really like it a lot. There is a SOUND CLIP on my homepage so you can hear it for yourself; also listen to Walt Koken play his Orph. #4 to hear its capability. It comes with a new gig-bag, and will be carefully packed. $1000., plus exact shipping and insurance. I'll reduce the price by another 3% if you pay with a check or MO.
