FOR SALE: GOLD TONE CELLO BANJO, MARCY MARXER MODEL, 4 STRING, CEB-4 and hard shell case
Serial # 21804048
i just purchased this, on 11/05/24. i have played it approximately 1/2 hr total. i put new strings on it (purchased specific, custom string set from gold tone, CES4, $25.99; i’ve played it for about 15 minutes with the new strings; never tied strings on to a tail piece before so the knots i tied might not be the best). just decided i would not have the time to play it. about two months i bought my first banjo (5 string) to learn clawhammer style banjo. i guess i kind of got carried away with my banjo dreams and bought this cello banjo less than a month ago. but i quickly realized that i could never learn how to play both 5 string clawhammer and cello banjo and i would have to abandon any fantasy of playing cello banjo in addition to clawhammer banjo.
i would say this cello banjo is in mint, like-new condition. not a blemish on it. i was going to say that the hard shell case (hsc) is in mint condition too but upon closer inspection (when taking photos for this posting actually) i noticed that the hsc does have two little places near the tail piece where the plush lining is worn or torn away. i don’t know how or when those defects occurred or how. but you can see them in the photos. one is on the top lid of the case and the other is on the bottom, where they come together when closed. there’s also a white streak or smudge on the exterior of the case near the head stock. i am pretty sure the case had this minor exterior blemish when i bought it. it’s very slight. i don’t know if it can be cleaned off or not. i haven’t tried. it’s visible in the photos. other than those minor deficiencies everything seems perfect to me.
i will post/list this instrument for sale on numerous forums/web sites. but if you can see this, the instrument is still available.
i keep my instruments in my climate-controlled, smoke-free, finished basement “studio” so this instrument will be kept safe, unused until sale.
my price is $900. but any reasonable offers will at least be considered.
i don’t know what to do about shipping as i don’t have a shipping box for it yet. (i bought it in person from a banjo shop in maryland.) i figure i will have to buy a box to fit this sort of over-sized object. i won’t know the shipping box dimensions until i find the proper size box.
i normally don’t pay for shipping. instead i require buyer to purchase shipping. but since i don’t have exact shipping box dimensions at this time i might choose to set a fixed shipping price to all destinations. sorry to be confusing. please ask any questions you have; perhaps shipping price can be a subject of negotiation.
case is 41” (long) x 19” (at widest), so shipping box will probably be something like 45” x 23” x 7”,
Cello banjo and case weigh 16.8 lbs so i imagine the total shipping weight (when boxed, packed) will be approximately 20 lbs.
ships from lutherville-timonium, md 21093
all sales are final; no returns; sold as is.
please look at all photos carefully and ask any questions before bidding, making an offer or purchase.
thank you for looking.
Take rustic banjo twang down an octave; the result is the CEB-4 Marcy Marxer Signature Series Cello Banjo by Gold Tone! On top of being the signature banjo of Grammy-winning songwriter Marcy Marxer, this CEB-4 Banjo Cello rescues a rare modified banjo of the early 20th century. Players can now explore deep, rustic tones that bristle with sounds rarely found in modern music. The CEB-4’s custom nylon-wound strings fuel round, dark, and warm tone, and a massive 14-inch maple pot assembly ensures outstanding projection. Unlike acoustic bass guitars, the CEB-4 is loud, articulate, and requires no amplification. Attentive tonewood selections let the CEB-4 hold its own in acoustic ensembles, but it’s hardly limited to group play! Much like a baritone guitar, the CEB-4 is a surprisingly worthy solo instrument that carefully balances low-end depth and melodic potential. The CEB-4’s standard tuning is CGDA — tuned in fifths and one octave below standard four-string banjo tuning. Such a player-friendly tuning means that those versed in mandolin, cello, or viola can pick it up the CEB-4 and get started in minutes!
