This is an 1880s/1890s classic-era banjo by J. B. Schall of Chicago, with a 13" rim and 17" neck. At some point in it's history someone installed a Guckert "Duplex" tone rim, patented by E. N. Guckert of Toledo, Ohio in 1922. It is adjustable up and down within the rim, like a Farmer or Van Eps tone ring, and turns the banjo into a raised head or "archtop" configuration when the adjusting screws are tightened.

The instrument was restored by Dave Stacy (of England) in the last 10-20 years. He installed a fretless fingerboard and custom made a new tension hoop. His work is impeccable. The tension hoop is not plated, but otherwise looks just like an original Schall hoop.

The banjo is in excellent condition overall, with all the original hooks, nuts and shoes present. There is some subtle, but very nice, engraving on the metal inlay and head piece. The J. B. Schall metal plate is a little unusual to find, as most just have the name stamped into the wood. The heel may have cracked at some point, but it has been repaired and seems very solid (see photos). Tuners are period Champion-style friction pegs, and the tailpiece is a modern No-Knot reproduction. It's strung with classic style nylon strings and a Cole style bridge. Plays very well and projects a lot of sound. The Guckert tone ring adds a lot of weight.

The banjo includes a modern hard shell case in new condition.
